South Bend school recognized as 2021 National Blue Ribbon School

INDIANAPOLIS – A South Bend school has been recognized by the United States Department of Education as a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School.

Swanson Traditional School, part of the South Bend Community School Corporation, is one of seven Indiana schools receiving this honor.

“With this distinction, Indiana’s Blue Ribbon Schools are shining bright on the national stage,” said Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education. “Through challenging times, these schools are not admiring the problem -- they’re focused on student-centered solutions. I’m thrilled to congratulate each of these schools for earning this honor, all centered around preparing each student with the knowledge and skills necessary for lifelong success.”

The Indiana Department of Education nominated each of the awarded schools for consideration into the U.S. Department of Education’s “Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools” category.

The category honors the state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps for student groups, including low income, racially and ethnically diverse, English learner, and special education students.

After receiving a nomination, these schools completed an application outlining their curriculum, culture, leadership, and engagement, which was then evaluated by the U.S. Department of Education.

Swanson is among 325 schools across the country to earn this distinction this year.
