South Bend’s West Side welcomes Mor Mex Supermercado

NOW: South Bend’s West Side welcomes Mor Mex Supermercado

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A new grocery store is opening its doors on the corner of Western Avenue and Olive Street, bringing some flavor and much needed fresh food back to the West Side of South Bend.

Mor Mex Supermercado, a family-owned business that has a smaller Elkhart location, has launched a larger Mexican-style supermercado. Inside, shoppers will find bright produce, a full butcher counter and a café, all while taking in the smells of fresh baked goods from the panderia.

This new store brings at least 30 jobs to town and accepts SNAP EBT payments.

City officials toured the market after a ribbon-cutting Friday morning, including the district’s councilwoman, Ophelia Gooden-Rodgers.

She said the area has been lacking grocery options since Kroger and Family Dollar closed their doors. Attracting new investment hasn’t been easy, but she’s excited to see this project operating after years of planning.

“So you can even ride the bus here so that’s a great asset to this community is to be this close and it’s wonderful. It has everything that I think a person would need,” Gooden-Rodgers said.

Mor Mex is open every day from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
