South Bend man sentenced to over five years for firearms offense

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A South Bend man was sentenced to over five years in prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

Jonnie Jones-Gunn, 31, was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison followed by two years of supervised release.

In March 2021, officers tried to pull Jones-Gunn over while he was driving more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit, according to case documents.

Jones-Gunn then led police on a short chase before stopping his vehicle, police said.

During a search of his vehicle, police found a stolen gun with a 30-round capacity magazine, reports said.

Jones-Gunn has prior felony convictions that prohibit him from possessing a firearm.
