SOUTH BEND, Ind. – According to officials, the South Bend Fire Department was called to an apartment complex in the 500 block of South Main Street. SBFD says the flames started from the first floor and extended throughout the building.
Officials say crews were able to rescue 5 victims. Four of the victims were transported to the hospital. As for the extent of their injuries, it is unknown at this time.
Following the devastation, 28 residents of the complex were displaced temporarily with the help of the Sheriff’s Department and the Red Cross.
Firefighters say their method of attack? Aggressive.
“Large fire on the first floor that was extending to the floors above it, we immediately went into aggressive rescue mode to attack it,” says Brandon Roark, Assistant Chief of South Bend Fire.
The cause of this fire is unknown at this time and is currently under investigation.
