Son of Elkhart mayor charged with OWI after falling asleep in drive-thru
Christian Roberson ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department reports a officers responded to the McDonald's at 130 N. Main St. on Saturday around 2:40 a.m., regarding an unknown medical problem.
Officers arrived to find a Kia Optima parked in drive-thru between the to take-out windows with the driver asleep.
Police then approached the driver, identified as Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson's son, 35-year-old Christian Roberson, who officers noted exhibited signs of possible impairment.
The report states medics with the Elkhart Fire Department also responded to the scene, but Christian didn't report any medical problems.
An officer on scene then administered field sobriety tests and a portable breath test.
Authorities also applied for and later executed a judicial search warrant for a certified blood draw.
Christian was taken to the hospital for the blood draw and police say the results are pending.
Christians was arrested and taken to Elkhart County Jail on a preliminary charge of Operating While Intoxicated with Prior, a Level 6 Felony.
This case has since been forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review of formal criminal charges.
Mayor Roberson released the following statement:
“This weekend, our son was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated. Regina and I love and will support him unconditionally through this difficult time. That being said, driving under the influence is dangerous and unacceptable. We believe in accountability, and our son will face this matter through the appropriate legal process.”
