Some state park properties closing temporarily for controlled deer hunts

Some Indiana State Park properties will temporarily close over the next few weeks for controlled deer management hunts, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources announced.

The first hunt will run from Monday, November 15 to Tuesday, November 16.

The second hunt will run from Monday, November 29 to Tuesday, November 30.

Participating state parks in Michiana include:

  • Chain O’Lakes
  • Indiana Dunes
  • Potato Creek
  • Tippecanoe River

These park properties will close to the public the evening before each hunt and reopen the morning after each hunt.

All other state park properties will operate as normal.

Biologists with the Indiana DNR figure out which parks need a deer management hunt each year based on habitat recovery and previous harvest rates.

These hunts help control browsing by deer to a level that ensures habitat for native animals and plants.

Only those selected from the draw can participate in the hunts.
