UPDATE: SBFD rescues cats, dogs, lizards, and snake from fire at Jefferson Apartments

UPDATE: The South Bend Fire Department reports crews responded to the 3000 block of Rue Renoir at the Jefferson Apartments just before 2 p.m., Friday, for a structure fire.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and a fire in the kitchen of an apartment unit.

Fire officials say the fire was brought under control quickly before crews checked for spread.

Officials say the fire was contained to the unit.

Crews say they were able to rescue five cats, two dogs, two lizards, and a snake from the unit.

Unfortunately, one dog did not survive.

The other animals suffered smoke inhalation. Firefighters began life-saving measures on the animals until the South Bend Animal Resource Center arrived to provide further care and transport.

One person was sent to the hospital for evaluation.

No firefighters were injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY: SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department confirmed a structure fire occurred at the Jefferson Apartments Friday.

Dispatch says the call came in around 1:56 p.m.

Fire officials say multiple animals were rescued, but one dog did die.

At least one person was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Crews on scene were said to wrapping up the scene just after 3 p.m.
