SBPD officer injured by two motorcyclists while directing traffic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Police Department reports two motorcyclists have been arrested following an incident occurring Friday, Oct. 11, while officers were directing traffic near School Field.

Officers were directing traffic on Eddy Street following a football game at School Field when they observed a large group of motorcyclists travelling north.

When officers attempted to stop traffic, the motorcyclists scattered around the officers, travelling in various directions.

Police say one motorcyclist drove directly at an officer, which led the officer to push the motorcyclist to prevent being struck and maintain the safety of other pedestrians.

As the officer was attempting to apprehend the rider, a female motorcyclist ran over the officer’s foot.

The woman then attempted to flee the scene by jumping onto the back of another motorcycle and ordering the rider to “go, go, go.”

The woman, identified as 28-year-old Gabrielle Yeazel, was ultimately detained.

As Yeazel was taken into custody, officers saw a man approach the downed motorcycle that had struck the officer.

An officer ordered the man to stop, but he fled on foot.

A taser was deployed but was unsuccessful, and the man then jumped on the back of another motorcycle and left the area.

A short time later, St. Joseph County 911 received a call from 28-year-old Sean Miller, who stated he was upset about his girlfriend, Yeazel, being taken into custody and stated he was going to kill the officer who tased him.

During the investigation at a residence in the 1100 block of S. 26th Street, Miller was located.

Authorities say he initially provided officers with a false name.

He then acknowledged he fled from police, but indicated the threat was a mix-up.

Miller was then taken into custody.

Yeazel and Miller were taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.

The injured officer went to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries to his foot.

After a review of case facts and evidence, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office charged Yeazel and Miller with multiple charges each.

Yeazel is charged with Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, a Felony, Resisting Law Enforcement, a Felony, and Possession of Marijuana, a Misdemeanor.

Miller is charged with Resisting Law Enforcement, a Felony, Intimidation, a Felony, and False Informing, a Misdemeanor.
