SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- New statewide ILEARN Results shows nearly 3 in 10 Indiana students are not yet proficient in both English Language Arts and Math. In South Bend, students are even further behind. Still, the district has seen slight year-over-year gains, bouncing back from the sharp decline in scores following the pandemic.
Educators are now taking a closer look at the data, not just at how students learn, but why some aren’t.
“That’s the one thing we want to improve upon, how do we accelerate it?” said Karla Lee, South Bend Schools’ Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction. “We know what we’re doing is working, but how do we change that data faster?”
The Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction sat down with ABC57’s Jackie Bauer to discuss what has contributed to the gains and how they plan to continue to fill the gaps.
As the district prepares for the first day of school on August 20, leaders say they’re focused on keeping the momentum going.
