SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Community Schools will implement a new code of conduct once students return after fall break.

For a clear understanding, SBCS will host an E-training day for faculty to learn and ask questions where they need clarity on the code before enforcing it.

The new policy was created over the last eight months with the collaboration of teachers, students, different organizations, the NAACP, and community members to uphold the integrity of the process.

The plan was to ensure they create a clear document that aligns with the district's mission, vision, strategic goals, and master compliance plan to establish their commitment to equity and non-discrimination.

SBCS staff, community partners, teachers, and parents gave their feedback alongside the data they analyzed before they established the new code.

Administrator Kendra Key made it clear that the changes were not a result of any particular event, but data shows confusion surrounding which behaviors received what consequence and they say it was simply time to clarify these issues and make an effort to be on the same page.

“Some folks were confused about which type of behaviors got which type of consequences, so we don’t want that confusion we want everyone to be on the same page," said Key. "It was time for sure, but you always have to look at your data and that’s something that we will be doing this time as well as we continue to review and revise the document in coming years looking at our data to inform the changes that we make for the betterment of our students.”

SBCS is hosting an E-learning session on Wednesday for faculty.

The goal is to invite families and communities to be a part of their continuous revision process by giving feedback directly to their children’s school to ensure students will have a productive learning environment.

"We want to know what you know and what you think. Is this clear, so if there are those concerns and questions, this is an on-going process. So, if you're able to bring those to us and if we need to make some changes, we are not afraid to make changes either.” said Key.

For more information about the new code of conduct, or if you have any feedback to offer, contact your child’s school directly with questions and concerns.
