Ribbon cutting Thursday to officially mark opening of new Link Trail

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Multiple city officials and community members will be on hand for a ceremonial ribbon cutting Thursday morning at the corner of Notre Dame Avenue and Angela Boulevard.
South Bend Mayor James Mueller, University of Notre Dame President Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C., Visit South Bend Mishawaka Executive Director Jeff Jarnecke and President of the St. Joseph County Hotel Motel Tax Board of Managers John Anthony will mark the completion of the new Link Trail with a walk and ribbon cutting beginning at 10 a.m. on April 24.
The walk is scheduled to end at the northeast corner of South Bend Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue, where a ribbon cutting will take place at 10:30 am.
Organizers say the Link Trail spans 1.5 miles and connects downtown South Bend with the University of Notre Dame.
"The urban trail begins in downtown South Bend in the plaza on the corner of LaSalle Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Boulevard," city officials said. "It takes pedestrians and bicyclists east on LaSalle Avenue, north on Hill Street, then northeast on South Bend Avenue to join Notre Dame Avenue. The trail culminates at the Angela Boulevard and Notre Dame Avenue intersection where users can continue to the University of Notre Dame campus or join the multiuse path along Angela Boulevard."
In November of last year, the City of South Bend, in partnership with the University of Notre Dame and Visit South Bend Mishawaka, announced the Link Trail, which was described as a new pedestrian and bicycle trail that connects downtown South Bend to the University of Notre Dame.
"The trail name, 'Link,' symbolizes the collaboration and connectivity between the two vibrant destinations," city officials said. "Stretching approximately 1.5 miles from downtown to the University, a leisurely walk along the trail takes about 30 minutes."
The project was funded jointly by the city, Hotel-Motel Tax Board via Visit South Bend Mishawaka, and the University of Notre Dame.
