UPDATE: Nearly 3,000 without power in Berrien County Thursday, hundreds out across rest of Michiana
UPDATE: The outage numbers have been updated as of 1:20 p.m., Thursday, with nearly 3,000 outages still affecting Berrien County.
Powerful winds are sweeping across the Michiana area, with many experiencing power outages.

UPDATE: Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) reports strong winds exceeding 70 mph, blowing snow, and extreme cold continues to impact many customers in Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana.
As of 1 p.m.., Thursday, I&M officials report that just over 3,500 customers are without power, with the majority in the Benton Harbor area.
Officials say a team of 300 I&M employees, including lineworkers, damage assessors, tree trimming experts and various support staff, are working safely and quickly to restore power.
So far, crews say they've discovered 20 broken or damaged utility poles and 39 individual spans of downed wires due to the wind.
I&M officials have released the number of outages and the estimated restoration time, which means when they expect to have 90 percent or more of customers restored.
Southwest Michigan:
- Buchanan area - 736 out with estimated restoration by p.m.
- Benton Harbor area - 2,607 out with estimated restoration by 10 p.m.
Northern Indiana:
- South Bend area - 22 out with estimated restoration time not given
- Elkhart area - 52 out with estimated restoration time not given
