NEW BUFFALO, Mich. -- For the past week your First Warning Neighborhood Weather Team has been reporting on the start of ice jamming in Michiana and this morning we found a place that could start to see the beginning of an ice jam.
Many ice floes are accumulating at the mouth of the Gailen River in New Buffalo, thanks to yesterday's warm temperatures melting ice sheets on our rivers and lakes in Michiana.
The main concern is these flows becoming an ice jam, or ice dam, where a temporary dam is created in a waterway. Flooding could occur upstream, something that has happened this year in areas around Cleveland and Kankakee, Ill.
