Portage Township provides assistance for families during the holiday season
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The Portage Township Trustee’s office is hosting their 2nd annual Coats for Kids drive to donate brand new coats to families in need, turning winter worries into warm smiles.
This is the last week for you to sign up for your child to join Trustee Jason Critchlow at the Meijer on Portage Road on Oct. 27, where they will pick out their own winter apparel.
“It’s a really fun day. We will be out there at Meijer with everyone who is eligible, and that has already pre-applied and been pre-approved and basically parents get to go out, they take their kids out, and they shop, they get what they need, we checkout, and it’s a fun day, and we’re really looking forward to it.” said Critchlow
Newborns are too small for coats, but you can opt to purchase other warm winter apparel items like winter gloves, hats, or other warm clothing that the trustee’s office will support.
The Portage Trustee’s Office has put into their budget, the cost for at least 130 participants, similar to last year.
Your application must be approved to be be deemed eligible after verifying residency and that families have a household income less than 150 percent of the federal poverty level.
The limit has not been reached yet, so you can still apply.
Be sure to visit the trustee’s office and bring your important documents with you to get your application approved before the deadline.
The last day to apply is Friday, Oct. 18, by noon at 340 Columbia Place.
You will need to bring a copy of your Photo ID, social security card, and birth certificates for the children inside your household alongside proof of residency.
Each family will receive $100 per child to spend on winter related items to save them money during the busy holiday season.
Coats for Kids is one of many initiatives that the Portage Township Trustee’s Office provides as a resource for the community.
You can apply for additional year-round assistance on their website.
