Portage Township

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Officials with Portage Township announced they're entering the final week of applications for their second annual Coats for Kids program, with the deadline being this Friday.

Eligible, families must have a household income of less than 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, $58,500 for a family of four.

Pre-approval is required, and each child aged 18 or under within the approved applicant household will be eligible.

Interested community members should apply in person at the Portage Township Trustee’s office located at 340 Columbia St. in South Bend, before noon on Friday.

Portage Township Trustee Jason Critchlow stated, “This is important to us because it's health and safety for children. Families struggling to make ends meet have enough on their plate and we want this to be one less worry.”

Approved applicants and families will join Critchlow and township staff at the Portage Road Meijer on Oct. 27 to shop for new winter coats and apparel.
