ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - Earlier Thursday, the Portage Manor Board of Managers met for the first time since December to discuss future plans for the manor. This comes after St. Joseph County officials announced the building will need to close soon.
Right now, a local doctor has expressed interest in purchasing the building, but right now the county council wants input from the board on what to do.
Council members are pushing for more funding from the state to support keeping the manor open. ABC57 spoke to Jenny Piontek, a new member of the board, who said she joined to advocate more for residents.
"I just wanna keep the board current," she said. "I want them to know this is something that's fluid that is affecting the residents, the staff, and myself as a volunteer. I don't like to see my friends worried, upset and scared."
Advocates have until May 9th to put forth alternative options for the building.
