UPDATE: South Bend shooting turns deadly

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A shooting in South Bend has turned deadly, and police have made an arrest in the case.

Police tell us 24-year-old Elijah Hereford was shot Monday night in the 3100 block of Western Avenue.  He was rushed to the hospital, but sadly, he never recovered.

Detectives quickly developed a suspect in the case, 24-year-old Malik Barnes.  According to a press release, police tracked him to an apartment in Elkhart and arrested him.

Barnes was booked into jail on an outstanding federal warrant and preliminary charge of murder.

An autopsy for Elijah Hereford is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
