People in Starke County prepare to fix damage after Tuesday night's storm
STARKE COUNTY, Ind. — Roofs, garages and chicken coops are among some of the damages left behind after Tuesday night's storm.
Constant banging can be heard on the side of Deanna Martin's garage. That's because her garage door was completely knocked down to the ground and the side of it is being ripped off by the wind.
"Just scary, scary. I could hear movement; I had two rockers on my porch. I'm sure those were moved off and then other things got picked up and moved."
What's even scarier is that outside the Knox city limits, you can't hear the warning sirens.
"I was on the phone with my son because I was scared, you know, this might be my last time. I kept telling him I could hear everything moving around up there. I had no idea what was going on," Martin explained.
Martin says there are only two things that let her know when to take shelter in her basement.
"One is the alert on my phone that tells me, and other is my boyfriend watching ABC57 News last night and keeping me up to date and telling me when to get to the basement and stay safe."
A torn-apart garage, broken trampoline, and yet another swing set gone with the wind. The only thing the storm can't tear apart is this community.
"A neighbor came over and said he has a tractor, and he offered his help, gave me his phone number. I have friends that have posted everything on Facebook and have offered to come out this weekend and help clean up, which is great, one being my daughter-in-law's brother. So people are coming to me and giving me help, which helps, I think, restore my faith in mankind," shared Martin.
She's restoring her faith in mankind, as mankind helps restore her property.
Martin shared that her boss was kind enough to give her the day off so that she can make the necessary phone calls needed to repair her broken property.
She says she's working hard to repair her garage and chicken coop and will likely need an entirely new pool, trampoline and swing set for her grandkids. One of her silos was picked up and blown into the farm next to her home.
