Penn-Harris-Madison announces schools will be open Tuesday

UPDATE (9:42 p.m.): Power has been restored to both Northpoint and Mary Frank Elementary Schools as of 8:30 p.m. this evening.

School is set to resume as normal tomorrow April 1.

ORIGINAL: SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Penn-Harris-Madison School Corp. officials announced in an email to parents and staff that the district plans to open all schools Tuesday, with the possible exception of Mary Frank and Northpoint Elementary Schools.

Due to Sunday's severe storm impacts, the district's administration called for an eLearning day Monday.

P-H-M officials say Northpoint and Mary Frank Elementary Schools remain without power, with Indiana Michigan Power indicating the outage could last through late Tuesday evening.

The district spans 135 square miles and receives power from I&M, Mishawaka Utilities, and NIPSCO.

Officials say P-H-M Transportation and Safety and Security Administrators are evaluating road conditions and coordinating with St. Joseph County officials to monitor closures and hazards.

If you're aware of conditions that may prevent bus service to your home or neighborhood, or have concerns over your child's safe trip to school, officials say you have the following options:

  • Transport your child to school yourself.
  • Keep your child home - This will be considered an excused absence, though your child will be responsible for making up any missed work.

P-H-M officials add they will allow groups and sponsors to continue with voluntary, previously planned events and activities Monday evening, except for Mary Frank and Northpoint Elementary.
