P-H-M school bus strikes bicyclist Monday morning

ABC 57

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Penn-Harris-Madison Schools sent out a letter to parents Monday afternoon informing them that Bus #40 struck a bicyclist while heading east on McKinley Highway, just past Elder Road in the morning.

911 was contacted immediately and Transportation Director Brandon Tugmon and P-H-M Safety Director Tommy Teeter went to the scene.

Another bus responded to scene to transport students to Schmucker.

The bicyclist was taken to the hospital for further evaluation, and the Mishawaka Police Department are investigating the collision.

Upon arriving at Schmucker, district officials say school counselors were on hand to talk with students about the incident.

After speaking with counselors, the school nurse individually examined them before releasing them to go to their classes. No students reported injuries.

Students were told they could be excused from classes at any point during the day if they wanted to speak with a counselor.

MPD said they responded to the crash shortly before 9 a.m., Monday, at the intersection of East McKinley and Elder Road.

Police say the bus with students struck a bicyclist that the bus driver did not see.

Authorities say there were no serious injuries to the bicyclist.
