UPDATE: As of 3:39 p.m., MDOT is reporting that eastbound lanes have reopened but drivers should still expect backups.

ORIGINAL: VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Michigan State Police are reporting that both directions of I-94 are shutdown at Mile Marker 46 (near Hartford in Van Buren County) due to multi-vehicle crash.

"Fifth District troopers investigating multi-vehicle crash totaling approximately 14 passenger vehicles and three semi-trucks, with one driver suffering critical injuries," Michigan State Police said.

"In addition, at least 15 vehicle slide offs separate from the crashes. Driving too fast for conditions believed to be a factor with heaving blowing snow producing whiteout conditions."

Drivers are encouraged to slow down and drive safely.
