BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- Fundraising efforts are underway for two new monuments in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph. Both will commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Once complete, this will be the only collaborative Twin Cities Public Art Project honoring King in the entire country.
Sharon and Mack Brown, founders of Benton Harbor’s African American History and Literature Gallery, came up with this idea to commemorate King 15 years ago.
The Benton Harbor statue features King’s figure standing at a table, gesturing for everyone to come and take a seat, to join in on the conversation of social justice. It’s also paired with a smaller statue of a young boy pushing a chair up to the table.
In St. Joseph, another statue will show King standing with two young kids, one releasing a dove towards the other monument.
Most of the money had already been raised for the projects. For the remaining $100,000 needed, project leaders are asking for $50,000 in community donations, which will then be matched to make $100,000!
If the goal is not met by the deadline of February 15, all money raised will still be matched and put towards the monuments.
