NOW: Where do our local politicians stand on the war in Iran?

ELKHART, Ind. — Tuesday, the ABC57 team reached out to every federally elected official in the Michiana area, including U.S. Senate reps in Indiana and Michigan, to hear their stance on the war in Iran.

None of those nine-congress people accepted our request for an interview.

Wednesday, our team followed up and asked those nine officials again.

Here's who responded:

Indiana Senator Todd Young spoke with ABC57 in-person at a "Fireside chat" event in Elkhart. He expressed his support for the Trump administration, as well as their plans to remove any remaining uranium from the region.

Senator Young stopped short of fully approving the idea of ground troops in Iran though, saying "I think the American people need to have buy-in before you start having a robust troop presence in some areas.”

Michigan Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin both declined an interview and provided statements from Tuesday, both of which were posted prior to the announcement of a conditional ceasefire Wednesday morning.

Senator Slotkin's full statement can be viewed here: Slotkin Statement on President Trump's Threat of U.S. Military Escalation against Iran - Senator Elissa Slotkin

Senator Peter's statement: “The President started this war flying by the seat of his pants. Now he’s threatening an outrageous, unconscionable escalation. We need a clear exit strategy, not a President recklessly putting even more U.S. servicemembers and innocent lives in harm’s way.”

Michigan 5th District Congressman Tim Walberg provided a statement that read in-part quote: “While they still cannot be fully trusted, yesterday, we saw a positive development with Iran showing a new willingness to negotiate on a peace proposal, and the President announcing a two-week ceasefire. We must finalize an agreement to restore peace in the Middle East and protect our national security."

Michigan 4th District Congressman Bill Huizenga posted a statement to social media about the situation, but did not send that statement to ABC57 News directly, and did not reply to our request for an interview.

Rep. Huizenga's social media post said the following: "A two week ceasefire is a positive development. This is an opportunity for the Iranian Regime to permanently end its support of terrorism. This starts by allowing the free flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz, abandoning its nuclear ambitions, and dismantling its ballistic missile development. I hope the new leaders in the Iranian Regime are able to meet the moment and chart a more peaceful path forward."

Indiana Senator Jim Banks, as well as Representatives Mrvan, Yakym and Stutzman all did not reply to ABC57's request for an interview.
