St Joseph County Police Department

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department reports deputies attempted to stop a stolen van on S.R. 23 / Cleveland Road on Saturday.

The driver fled with SJCPD in pursuit. The pursuit was then terminated just before Ironwood Road on S.R. 23 after responding officers lost sight of the van.

As a result, additional SJCPD officers as well as South Bend police arrived on scene.

After searching the area, an officer spotted 26-year-old Caleb Martin running behind the Martin’s Supermarket, disappearing behind a wood panel fence. As the officer approached the fence, he spotted the stolen van parked and abandoned.

In an effort to flee from officers, Martin attempted to jump down to the road below before tripping and falling about 20 feet. He got up and continued to flee down Dunn Road.

Another officer and K9 Bullet tracked Martin to the 18000 block of Dunn where he was hiding under a tarp.

Martin was then arrested on preliminary charges of Felony Resisting Law Enforcement, Resisting Law Enforcement, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Paraphernalia.

Martin also had an active warrant in St. Joseph County for Felony Theft, Elkhart County for Burglary and Escape, and Cass County for Felony Theft.

This case has been sent to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for formal charges.
