JULY 2 UPDATE: Wednesday morning the Berrien County Sheriff's Office released the name of the man who was shot and killed by police in Niles Township on Monday.

"The Michigan State Police have been able to make notification of the family of the deceased suspect in this incident," the BCSO said.

"The deceased suspect has been identified as Joshua B. Coffey, white male, 48 years of age, [of] South Bend."

JULY 1 UPDATE: Authorities have confirmed to ABC57 that the suspect vehicle was parked in a suspicious spot in the grass and the driver and the passenger were outside of the vehicle and that is why the deputy approached.

There was no traffic stop initiated.

When the deputy approached, the male passenger ran off and a woman got into the vehicle and started driving.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office have since found that vehicle, but it is unclear if the female suspect was still in it, or if she was detained.

ORIGINAL: NILES, Mich. -- At approximately 6 p.m. earlier today, a Berrien County Deputy encountered a vehicle on Third Street south of Fort Street in Niles Charter Township.

Upon the deputy approaching the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle fled southbound on Third Street, while the passenger exited the vehicle, fleeing on foot.

While pursuing the person who fled on foot, the male subject produced a firearm and shot at the deputy.

The deputy than returned fire, killing the suspect.
