New partnership expands sexual assault care for children in Elkhart County
Maple City Health Care Center ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Survivors of child sexual abuse and assault in Elkhart County can now get much needed specialized medical care without leaving the community.
Maple City Health Care Center and Child and Parent Services (CAPS) have partnered to bring Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) services to the county.
Children who experience sexual abuse or assault who need a medical forensic exam had to travel to medical systems outside of Elkhart County, putting essential care out of reach for many.
“It is vital for anyone in our community who experiences sexual abuse or assault to receive trauma-informed care and support in a safe and welcoming clinical environment,” shared Elizabeth Diaz, SANE Coordinator at MCHCC. “We are grateful to partner with CAPS to provide this crucial resource for those in need in our county.”
The SANE program ensures children, adolescents, and adults have access to trauma-informed care, evidence collection, and appropriate follow-up medical care closer to home.
Rebecca Fast, CEO of CAPS, stated, “When a child experiences sexual abuse or assault, it is crucial that timely compassionate care is available. CAPS and MCHCC are filling a gap in access that will help to improve the healing process for those in our community impacted by sexual abuse.”
The SANE program is conducted by specialized nurses trained in providing compassionate, trauma-informed medical care.
Services include forensic medical examination and interview, evidence collection, injury assessment and documentation, comprehensive medical forensic examination, and navigation and support through additional healthcare and mental health resources.
Through this specialized program and the supportive continuum of child and family services available through MCHCC and CAPS, children and families impacted by sexual abuse and assault are given the best opportunity for healing and recovery.
By combining their expertise, MCHCC and CAPS are building a stronger, better coordinated system, giving child sexual abuse and assault survivors in Elkhart County timely access to care and support.
