Mural mania comes to South Bend

South Bend, Ind. -- The very first Mural Festival is in South Bend called mural mania. Today is day four of the event and was started by local muralist Alex Ann Allen after attending her first mural festival two years ago.

Besides Alex Allen every other muralist is from places across the country, two of them Candy Kuo and Brittany Johnson are both from Austin, Texas who paint murals all over.

There are little bits of South Bend in each of the murals, but each one is individually inspired by the artist.

While walking around downtown you can see signs by the walls saying who the artist is while advertising the festival.

It is set to end on Sunday and there are five different sites where murals are being painted.

The sites include Hammer and Quill, Cloud Walking Coffee, The Cellar Wine Bar and the South Bend Civic Theatre, The Garage Arcade Bar is set to receive its mural at a later date.

“Globally and universally art just spreads happiness and that’s my goal at least and I know before I painted murals it really made me feel good to see color on the street. Show other people that you can be an artist and this a career path that you can go down and support yourself,” said Johnson.

Brittany came to South Bend after doing a mural festival in the U-K and looks forward to doing more murals with her puppy and partner by her side.

“It’s actually the best part of this. I am a bit of an introvert so I don’t typically get a whole lot. So when I am out painting that is my time to socialize and talk to people. It’s nice because I get to talk about something that I am passionate about and I love doing,” said Kuo.

Today is your last chance to see the festival and the artists at work.

You can check them out at Hammer and Quill, Cloud Walking Coffee, The Cellar Wine Bar, and The South Bend Civic Theatre.
