UPDATE: A motorcyclist remains in critical condition Friday after crashing at the roundabout of Brick and Gumwood Roads Thursday afternoon.

The St. Joseph County Police Department reports police attempted to make a traffic stop on the motorcyclist around 3:40 p.m. near Cleveland and Hickory Roads after police say the motorcyclist was driving erratically, traveling at excessive speeds, and disregarding traffic signals.

Police say the suspect then fled north on Hickory Road, at which point the pursuit was terminated.

The officer said the suspect could be seen continuing east on Brick Road at a high speed while weaving through traffic.

The officer continued east on Brick Road in the event of a crash. Police say the officer wasn't pursuing the suspect at this point. The officer did not have his lights and sirens activated at this time.

As the officer approached the roundabout at Brick and Gumwood Roads, he saw the motorcyclist had crashed.

The report states the officer immediately rendered aid.

Due to the severity of the crash and an attempted traffic stop occurred, St. Joseph County FACT was activated to investigate.

The preliminary investigation determined the motorcycle entered the roundabout traveling east in the westbound lanes, struck a curb, and lost control.
