Monday morning house fire in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Fire Department responded to the 200 block of Jefferson and N 2nd Street for a possible structure fire just before 1 a.m. on Monday, June 24.

The report states a passerby called in the fire and alerted the residents within the home.

The occupants escaped the house without incident.

Fire crews arrived on scene to find a three-story home with heavy smoke and flames coming from the attic space.

Firefighters quickly entered the home to perform a primary search while additional firefighters gained access to the roof and deployed fire attack lines.

Crews found no one else in the home and continued fighting the attic fire.

The fire was quickly knocked down before crew members spent time extinguishing hot spots.

Fire crews spent 20 minutes fighting the flames before it was deemed under control.

The fire was contained to the attic, but the second and first floors sustained heavy water damage.

Crews contacted the American Red Cross to provide assistance.

No residents or firefighters reported any injuries.
