Mishawaka set to break ground on Miracle Field

NOW: Mishawaka set to break ground on Miracle Field

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- A brand-new park and baseball field are being built in Mishawaka.

It's designed specifically for people with physical and mental disabilities.

The Miracle League is a national organization out of Atlanta and Mishawaka will soon join over 300 cities nationwide offering accessible baseball fields.

Park Superintendent for the City of Mishawaka Phil Blasko says Normain Park was chosen as the site because of nearby amenities like a fire station, hotels and restaurants.

The inclusive baseball field will feature turf for wheelchairs and walkers along with accessible dugouts.

Funding for phase two of the project, which includes a splash pad, pavilion and accessible play areas, is already underway.

To make that a reality, the city is still seeking additional donors to help. For people who are interested in contributing, Blasko says they can visit the City of Mishawaka's website.

"We have many of people that live here in Mishawaka, St. Joe County that are 40-50, years old, that have never got on a swing, that have never been able to play baseball. We want to be able to have them play as well. No matter how old you are, everyone loves to play. If you have never had a chance to play, we want to give them a chance to play. This field is just going to do just that," Blasko said.

The city plans to break ground this July with the hopes of opening the field by spring of 2026.
