Bridging the healthcare gap in Michiana
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind.-- Self-defense is a skill that can benefit anybody in any dangerous situation and one local gym in Mishawaka is helping women by hosting a class to help make them feel safe in the community.
The first women's self-defense classes at Revolution Fitness Center will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9 starting at 9 a.m. The class is geared toward women in Michiana. The owner, Todd Brown said it’s a service they provide to help women in the community feel comfortable.
The class is taught by Brown who has twenty years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is a UFC veteran. The lessons are geared toward women to help them protect themselves in real-life situations, and knowing the basics of self-defense can help an individual better respond to threats against their safety.
Brown said the class teaches women how to handle and approach a life-threatening situation, how to escape, how to keep safe, and how to avoid them.
“When you’re looking at women, who are typically smaller or not quite as strong as men, we have to teach them in a little bit of a different way. How to defend themselves, how to move out of the situation, instead of stand their ground and fight," Brown said.
The women's self-defense class will take place every 60 days. Today's two-hour-long class starts at 9 a.m. and is free to the public. The next classes will be $10
