Student allegedly brings stolen handgun to Dowagiac Middle School

DOWAGIAC, Mich. - A 13-year-old student was arrested on Monday after allegedly bringing a stolen handgun to Dowagiac Middle School, according to the Dowagiac Police Department.

At 10:15 a.m., police were told a person who lives outside of the city of Dowagiac found a handgun and a handgun magazine in their grandson's bedroom that morning.

Police and School Resource Officers learned the student was at Dowagiac Middle School.

The student was brought to the office and while searching him, police found a handgun hidden in his pants, according to reports.

According to Dowagiac Superintendent Jonathan M. Whan, the handgun was an unloaded .22 handgun and no ammunition was found.

Officers later learned the handgun was stolen from a residence outside of city limits.

The registered owner of the handgun reported that two handguns were missing from their residence.

Both handguns and ammunition were recovered by police.

The 13-year-old student was taken to a Juvenile Detention Facility on the charges of receiving and concealing a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm, and possession a weapon in a weapon's free school zone.

The Cass County Sheriff's Department is handling the investigation.
