UPDATE: Woman dead, man remains in hospital following truck crash into creek

UPDATE: The Michigan City Police Department announced officers arrived on scene to find the pickup truck submerged in approximately eight to 10 feet of water and learned that no one had surfaced.

MPD and Michigan City Fire Department divers were immediately deployed in the water upon arrival. 

Divers removed two people from the rear passenger compartment area of the pickup truck. 

The man and woman were taken to Franciscan Health Hospital in critical condition before being transferred to University of Chicago Hospital for advanced medical treatment.

Police say the woman, identified as 50-year-old Sherawn Chappell of Corbin, Ky., died at the hospital on Oct. 5.

The man's identity has not been released due to the ongoing investigation. He is continuing to receive medical treatment in Chicago.

Authorities say it's currently unknown if drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor to this crash. 

The investigation is ongoing.

ORIGINAL STORY: MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Officers from the Michigan City Police Department responded to the area of 100 Water Street after the La Porte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call about a vehicle that drove into Trail Creek.

Two adults were pulled from the vehicle and taken to Franciscan Hospital for medical treatment. They were then transferred to a hospital in the Chicago area for more advanced care and are currently in critical condition.

The Michigan City Police Department’s Investigative Division arrived at the scene and took over the investigation.
