MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Michigan City Police Department has partnered with the Violent Crime Reduction Initiative for their 2019 Silence the Violence Gun Drive.
The drive was held on Friday, March 1 and will continue on Saturday, March 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Michigan City Police Department is asking citizens to bring unloaded handguns into the department lobby and in return, they will be given a $100 VISA Gift Card.
Additionally, $50 will be given for every shotgun and rifle turned over to the department.
The department is also accepting BB guns, pellet guns, starter pistols, and other gun pieces and they will in turn be destroyed. Unwanted ammunition will also be accepted for disposal.
The Michigan City Police Department’s goal is to reduce violent crime and to help people better secure their guns. The department will be offering free gun locks to all residents to aid this initiative.
