ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- September is Suicide Prevention Month and across Michiana, there are many resources available for those in need.

According to the CDC, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in Indiana. Data from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline shows Elkhart County has one of the highest call-rates in Michiana at 734 reported in 2019.

"It's much more prevalent and much more common than we think. By keeping it under the table and not being able to talk about it, we're actually preventing care. By being open and honest and having those hard conversations can really help someone can connected to care," Director of Crisis Services for Oaklawn Psychiatric Center Ricky Mountsier said.

The Oaklawn Crisis Center addresses these statistics by offering grief support groups and community training programs in suicide intervention. Its safeTALK and ASIST programs equip community members and staff with essential intervention skills.

"So really looking into help pull somebody out of the river of suicide when they've entered that river. We want to be able to throw that lifeline to that person and help float them out whenever we can," Mounstsier said.

The month is also bringing the community through various suicide prevention walks, including a countywide event hosted by the League for Encouraging Empowerment this Saturday.

The walk, taking place at Stone Lake Beach in downtown Cassopolis, aims to raise awareness and encourage open conversations about mental health.

"This is people's lives that we're talking about, it's something very important. We just want to make sure we're there for everyone. It doesn't take a lot. People don't realize one little nice word can help somebody," President of League for Encouraging Empowerment Carmen Peake said.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts or actions, you're never alone. You can reach the Suicide Crisis Lifeline at any moment, by calling or texting 988.
