Metro Homicide Unit investigating after suspect fatally shoots himself

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating a police chase in South Bend that ended with the suspect taking his own life.

This began Thursday evening when police started investigating the armed robbery of a person on Primrose, between Auten and Adams on South Bend's northwest side.

Police say they were given a description of the suspect, and were told where they might find that suspect.  Later, they spotted a person and a vehicle matching that description.

Officers tried pulling that vehicle over, but the driver took off.  After a short chase, the vehicle went off the road.  As officers were getting out of their squad cars, they say the driver shot himself.

Police tried to save his life, and he was rushed to the hospital, but he never recovered.

The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Ronald Goodsell Jr.

An autopsy will be conducted in Fort Wayne on Saturday.
