Man who drowned saving child in St. Joseph River positively identified

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- The man who drowned after saving a child who was struggling in the St. Joseph River has been identified as 45-year-old Matthew Kihlstrand, according to the Berrien County Sheriff's Office.

The autopsy determined he died as a result of accidental drowning.

Kihlstrand was on a pontoon boat June 19 with another adult and three juveniles when one of the juveniles began to struggle in the water.

Kihlstrand successfully saved the child, but he went under the water and never resurfaced.

His body was located on Sunday.
