Notre Dame holds off North Carolina, 37-26
ABC 57 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- With rain impacting majority of Notre Dame’s trip to Chapel Hill, the Irish leaned on their rush attack to bully their way into a 5-0 start to the season. The 37-26 win wasn’t smooth sailing in ACC territory, but the Irish held off Bill Belichick and Co. down the stretch.
It was a fantastic first half for Jordan Faison, who posted 109 yards with two touchdowns. However, for the first time this season, Notre Dame defense gave up multiple touchdowns in a game. Billy Edwards Jr. threw two interceptions in the first half, but also two touchdown passes. The Irish only led 21-14 heading into the locker-room.
The Tar Heels then opened the second half with a touchdown on a 98-yard kickoff return. North Carolina was trailing by a point after the sloppy special teams play caused by the elements.
The Irish leaned on their run game as the rain fell and did it effectively with 45 rushing attempts for 241 yards, with an average of 5.4 yards per carry. True freshman Jonaz Walton led the way with 23 attempts for 120 yards. Nolan James Jr. averaged 7.2 yards on his 9 carries.
It was a solid day from quarterback CJ Carr, who finished the game with 4 touchdown passes for 234 yards and 21-29.
Ultimately, Notre Dame holds off UNC for their fifteenth consecutive double-digit victory, the fifth longest streak in college football. Notre Dame returns home to host Stanford on October 10. The 3:30pm kickoff will be the lone home game for the Irish in October.
