Man tells police he was waiting to be caught after breaking into house

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. - Van Buren County Sheriff's Office reports that deputies responded to the 36000 block of CR 215 for a suspicious vehicle in the driveway of an unoccupied residence, around 10 a.m. Thursday.

Authorities arrived and saw a green Dodge pick-up in the driveway which appeared to be stuck. 

Deputies found and followed the foot tracks that led to the residence. 

They found 36-year-old Curtis Toombs inside and it was found he didn't belong there and had broken in. 

Documents state, during an interview, Toombs admitted to breaking into the house and the green Dodge pick-up was stolen by him in Kalamazoo County. 

Toombs stated he thought the place was abandoned and planned to stay there until he was caught. 

Toombs was taken to Van Buren County Jail without incident for breaking and entering and receiving and concealing stolen property.

Toombs was arraigned Friday morning and given a $5,000 bond in Van Buren County. 

He also has a hold in another jurisdiction. Van Buren County authorities coordinated with Kalamazoo regarding the recovered stolen truck. 

This investigation is ongoing.
