Man found guilty of murder, other offenses after two people hit by truck
VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- After initially being arrested late last year, a now 34-year-old Gregory Campos has been found guilty of second-degree murder, drug possession, and more.
Deputies with the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office first responded to a report that a man had intentionally hit two people with his truck and drove into a house around 2:45 a.m. on Dec. 23, 2024, in the 46000 block of C.R. 665 in Waverly Township.
"Upon arrival Deputies located the 33-year-old suspect still on scene and a seriously injured 28-year-old Decatur woman lying in the yard," authorities said. "The suspect was immediately detained, and medical assistance was provided to the female. VanBuren EMS arrived on scene and transported the female to the hospital where she died because of her injuries."
The sheriff's office says a second victim, a 28-year-old man from Paw Paw, was also hit by the truck and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities say the initial investigation revealed Campos arrived at the residence looking for his girlfriend, but she was not there.
"An altercation took place between the two victims and the suspect in the driveway of the residence," the VBCSO said.
"The suspect then intentionally struck both subjects with his truck leaving the female mortally injured in the yard. The male victim tried to escape into the residence after being hit the first time and the suspect crashed his truck into the residence trying to hit him again. The truck became disabled, and the suspect remained at the scene."
As Campos was being arrested, authorities found methamphetamine on him, and he also admitted to using meth prior to coming to the house.
On Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, Campos, of Mattawan, was found guilty following a jury trial at the 36th Circuit Court.
Guilty on charges of:
- Second degree murder
- Assault w/great bodily harm
- Operating while intoxicated causing death
- Possession of a controlled substance
Campos' sentencing is scheduled for March 18.
