Man charged with Burglary after allegedly stealing a car he slept in
Elkhart County Jail ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A 21-year-old was charged with Burglary after allegedly driving off from a secure lot with a stolen vehicle Thursday, Feb. 19.
The 21-year-old, Skylar Stroder, was charged with one count of Burglary as a Level 5 Felony.
According to the Probable Cause Affidavit, an employee of Paul's Auto Yard noticed a man in a hoodie inside the secure area of the salvage yard around 8:27 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19.
The employee said that they saw the man enter a Ford Fusion owned by the company and leave the secure lot driving north on C.R. 10. Another employee then alerted the Elkhart Police.
Officers later visited Paul's Auto Yard, noting the stolen vehicle's license plate. The officers also noted the suspect had cut a yellow chain to gain access to the secure lot and driven a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage around the lot and got it stuck in mud before taking the Fusion.
An officer saw a Fusion matching the description of the stolen vehicle driving east on C.R. 6 and performed a traffic stop on the vehicle.
The driver, Stroder, was the only one in the vehicle and he was patted down, finding the key to a 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage. Stroder's shoes were also noted to be muddy. Inside the Fusion, the officer found bolt cutters with yellow paint transferred onto them.
Stroder started by stating that he'd gotten the Fusion from a friend, but later allegedly admitted to entering the secure lot at night where he said he slept in the Fusion. He then stated that he panicked and took the Fusion with him as he fled when he was discovered in the morning.
The stolen vehicle was returned to Paul's Auto Yard and the bolt cutters were taken into evidence. Stroder was taken to the Elkhart County Jail where he was incarcerated.
Stroder's initial hearing has been set for Friday, Mar. 6.
