Man charged in deadly 2025 pickup truck/motorcycle crash

St. Joseph County Jail

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A Texas man is facing charges for a deadly 2025 crash between a motorcycle and a pickup truck.

Texas man Edward Fabian Ochoa faces two felony counts: Causing Death When Operating a Motor Vehicle with an ACE of .08 or More and Causing Death When Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated.

Back in July, officers were dispatched to the intersection of IN-933 and Cleveland in St. Joseph County on a report of a crash. Officials found Ricki Balmer, the driver of the motorcycle, unconscious and suffering an apparent severe leg injury. He was taken to the hospital, where he died within 24 hours.

Officers spoke to Ochoa and his passenger at the scene. The two allegedly told officers that they had been on a date and drank alcohol that night. They also allegedly said they were attempting to cross IN-933 when the crash occurred. Testing showed that Ochoa had a blood alcohol content of .324 g/100mL, over four times the legal limit.

Ochoa's initial hearing is scheduled for June 3.
