LA PORTE, Ind. -- Microsoft held a ground-breaking ceremony for their new one-billion-dollar Data Center in La Porte, Indiana today, but it's only the beginning of a lengthy expansion plan.

The Data Center in La Porte will be built in phases, with the final phase not scheduled to be finished until 2032.

Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith told ABC57 that construction is beginning now on the first phase, which will include six buildings.

"We're hoping to complete phase one over the next few years, say by 2029. We'll see when we can start the expansion, but this is the kind of thing that typically, I suspect you're going to see this continue to grow, this decade and maybe early into the next."

Smith also said that Microsoft plans to hire locally, "Microsoft believes in hiring local contractors, and doing business with local companies. There may be a day when you think wow, there's a lot of people here, but this is going to be an economic boost for the town and the city of La Porte."

When the project was announced in 2024, the Governor's office claimed that this Data Center project would create up to 200 jobs by the end of 2032.
