Man arrested for Domestic Battery, OWI following crash

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to the 4600-west block of US 20 regarding a disturbance on Saturday around 12:29 a.m.

Authorities say they arrived to find a vehicle had crashed into a ditch.

The report states a 17-year-old girl was also located near the vehicle. She then told deputies she had been battered by a man who then crashed the vehicle.

A deputy then located 21-year-old Caleb M. Austin walking west along US 20 near C.R. 525 West.

Deputies on scene were told the teen was driving the vehicle east on US 20 when an argument began with Austin.

The teen told authorities Austin began to batter her before grabbing the steering wheel causing the vehicle to go off the side of the road.

The teen stated she was then able to regain control and stop the vehicle before exiting.

The report states that's when Austin got in the driver's seat, began operating the vehicle, and crashed it into the ditch.

After crashing the vehicle, the teen stated Austin fled the scene west along US 20.

Austin was taken to an area hospital for medical clearance and then to the La Porte County Jail.

Austin was arrested for OWI, a Class A Misdemeanor, OWI, a Class C Misdemeanor, DWS (Prior), a Class A Misdemeanor, Domestic Battery, a Class A Misdemeanor, Criminal Recklessness, a Class B Misdemeanor, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash, a Class B Misdemeanor.

Austin remains in jail and is being held on a $605 cash-only bond.
