Jerry Hensley ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Court documents from St. Joseph County reveal 51-year-old Jerry Hensley has been charged with Arson Resulting in Bodily Injury, a Level 3 Felony, and Arson, a Level 4 Felony, following an Oct. 13 incident.
Hensley's initial court date is scheduled for Nov. 4 with a jury trial set for Feb. 23, 2026.
The St. Joseph County Police Department reports officers responded to a house fire with people inside on Tyler Road on Oct. 13.
Upon arrival, police observed the home engulfed in flames.
Police soon found a man, identified as Hensley's brother, covered in soot and bleeding. The suspect's brother told police he lived there and had gone into the home to make sure no one else was inside.
The brother was treated by medics on scene for injuries he suffered while checking inside the house.
More of Hansley's family arrived on scene and told authorities earlier in the day that they had been there and when they left, Hensley was on the porch.
One relative told police while they were out, Hensley called to tell her she had "f-ed" up with him and he was setting her house on fire.
Police say three family members heard Hensley take responsibility for the fire.
Authorities then began searching for Hensley, locating him in Wakarusa.
The report states when police approached him, he said he knew why they were there and allowed them to take him into custody.
Authorities learned Hensley has two prior violent convictions in Indiana, with one for Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and Domestic Battery, as well as a prior Residential Entry conviction.
