Man accused of marijuana possession, having firearm as serious violent felon

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - A man was arrested on Monday after officers found marijuana and a firearm in his possession despite being a serious violent felon, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Todd Allen Gray Jr., 31, was arrested on the charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

On Monday, an officer with the Mishawaka Police Department came across a white Ford Escape that seemed to not have a license plate. When the officer caught up to the vehicle, he still could not see a plate.

The officer pulled the vehicle over and once it was stopped, he noticed a paper plate in the tinted rear window, according to reports.

The officer approached the vehicle and spoke with the driver, identified as Todd Gray Jr., and a passenger.

According to reports, the passenger was acting nervously and moving slower than normal. The officer could also smell marijuana, police said.

Both occupants initially denied having marijuana in the vehicle but eventually, Gray told the passenger to "give up the bag," reports said.

The officer was given a small wallet with a plant substance inside. The substance field tested positive for marijuana.

As the passenger got out of the vehicle for a search of the vehicle's interior, the officer noticed the passenger fumbling with the seat belt underneath her jacket.

Underneath the jacket was a black SCCY 9mm pistol that the passenger said was hers, according to reports.

Gray then admitted to knowing the gun was there and handling it, police said. According to reports, his previous conviction for robbery makes him a serious violent felon.
