M-51 and U.S. 12 lanes in Niles to return to normal Wednesday

NILES, Mich. -- The Michigan Department of Transportation announced the lanes at the intersection of M-51 and U.S. 12 in Niles will return to normal on Wednesday, following the $27 million year-long project.

MDOT says the remaining work includes traffic signal upgrades, tree planting, and restoration work.

Crews will complete the traffic signal upgrades in the coming weeks.

The restoration work and tree planting will begin in the spring.

"On Wednesday, [MDOT] will return traffic to its original lanes, essentially completing the rebuilding of the new intersection, as well as rebuilding 1 mile of US-12 and 2.7 miles of M-51," MDOT said in a statement.

Officials say the remaining work is expected to have minimal impacts on traffic.
