Loss prevention officer injured during theft

ELKHART, Ind. – A loss prevention officer was injured during a theft on Saturday morning, the Elkhart Police Department reported.

At 11:17 a.m., a call came in about a shoplifter that had battered a loss prevention officer at the Walmart on C.R. 6.

When an officer arrived to the scene, he learned that the suspect had already left the scene in a vehicle.

According to the investigation, a male in the vestibule was pushing a loaded shopping cart toward the exit doors and carrying a duffle bag, according to reports.

The loss prevention officer grabbed the duffle bag from the suspect, and the suspect struck the officer on the side of his face, reports said.

The officer fell to the floor and hit his head on the concrete.

The suspect then ran out the exit door, according to reports.

The suspect allegedly stole several items and left in a black, four-door passenger vehicle, reports said.

The loss prevention officer was taken to the hospital for treatment.

No arrests have been made at this time.

This incident is still being investigated.
