SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Reconstruction of the Leeper Park Tennis Courts begin on Monday, July 21.
The project will cost a total of $1.8 million, and construction includes new post-tensioned concrete surfaces for 13 full-sized courts.
Other improvements will include new net anchors, posts, nets, sidewalks and fencing.
Construction is expected to be complete by the end of September, weather permitting.
The project is funded by City of South Bend, Visit South Bend Mishawaka and the South Bend Community Tennis Association.
The courts will officially be renamed as the David Filer Tennis Center, in honor of David Filer, a tennis prodigy who died of brain cancer at the age of 16.
Improvements will expand youth programming opportunities and put South Bend as a destination for higher level tennis tournaments.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held in the near future and more details will be released closer to the date.
