UPDATE: Teen accidentally shot family member in back of head on E. Windsor Avenue, EPD says

UPDATE: The Elkhart Police Department have revealed the victim of Sunday night's non-fatal shooting on E. Windsor Avenue to be a 19-year-old man.

Police say the initial investigation determined that a 16-year-old boy, related to the victim, was handling a handgun when he accidentally fired it, striking the victim in the back of the head.

The 19-year-old was taken to the hospital for treatment of what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The police report states after further investigation, the 16-year-old was released to a parent.

The case has been forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

ORIGINAL STORY: ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department confirmed officers are actively investigating a non-fatal shooting that occurred on Sunday at approximately 9:02 p.m. in the area of the 600 block of East Windsor Avenue and C.R. 9. 

Upon arrival, officers located a male victim with an apparent gunshot wound.

Elkhart Fire Department Medics transported the victim to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

There is no update on the male's condition at this time. 

Officers detained an individual in connection with the ongoing investigation. 

The Elkhart Police Department believes this to be an isolated incident and there is no further danger to the public.
